TOCOM Platinum
Platinum is a rare metal which is used for industrial purposes, to make jewelry and as a store of value as a precious metal. Platinum is mined in many countries but the largest mines are in Russia, South Africa and North America. About half of the world's annual production of platinum is used in the production of automobiles in the exhaust system for emission control. Another 20% or so is used for jewelry and the rest is used for other industrial uses and for investment purposes usually in the form of bars or coins.
The TOCOM Platinum standard futures contract was first listed in 1984 and is a deliverable contract. The contract and delivery unit is 500 grams for the regular contract. There is also a mini-contract traded on TOCOM which is one fifth the size of the standard contract at 100 grams but is not deliverable and is financially settled. The contract months are all even months in a year. TOCOM and NYMEX are the two main exchanges in the world that offer platinum futures trading. The platinum futures contract is one of the more popular contracts on TOCOM and is popular with investors as well as speculators due to above average volatility, arbitrage opportunities as well as offering diversification for various kinds of commodity investment funds. Platinum futures contracts are traded continuously on an electronic platform during the hours written below.
